Review methodology
Each hands-on review follows the same six steps at our Rotterdam bench.
- Order and timing log. We record the date and time of order placement, the confirmation, the dispatch notice and the delivery day. The days-to-door figure printed in a review comes from that log, not from a carrier estimate.
- Unboxing and packaging notes. The parcel is opened under two daylight-balanced lamps. We note packaging layers, protective materials, dust bags, spare parts, care cards and anything missing from the listed contents.
- Dimension and material check. External dimensions are taken with a tape and calipers at three points and compared with the listed figures. Materials are checked against the composition label, and hardware, stitching density and edge finishing are recorded at close range.
- Fit and use period. Wearable items get a 14-day use period in normal Rotterdam weather; bags and travel objects are carried for the same period with a fixed load. We note abrasion points, strap behaviour, closure performance and how the item looks after the period ends.
- Comparison table. The product is set against two reference items from our shelf — one at a similar price, one above it. The table lists dimensions, weight, material, hardware, price paid and the differences we can defend.
- Scoring. Tom Ashcroft completes the scoring sheet against the five-point scale: 5 excellent, 4 good, 3 adequate, 2 poor, 1 very poor. Scores are written as X / 5, and hands-on scores in published reviews run from 4.0 to 5.0. The sheet is signed off before drafting begins.
Featured products return for a retest every 12 months, repeating the same six steps against the same reference items.
