Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Pair Against Two Bench References

We measured, wore and pulled the drawcord on this $7.46 polyester short, then set it against two bench references. The cut and closure hold up; the missing measurements and buyer reviews are the real risk.

Für wen geeignet

Anyone wanting a plain-to-scripted black polyester short in a straight mid-thigh cut for summer daily wear, who will ask the seller for flat measurements before ordering in sizes M to 3XL.

Wer verzichten sollte

Shoppers who need a documented size chart, verified durability or independent reviews before buying. Order a short with published specifications instead of gambling on an undocumented waist.

Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Pair Against Two Bench References

The comparison table came before the review

On this desk the table is built first, not last. Before we wrote a word about the Foreign Trade pair we picked two shorts from our reference shelf to sit either side of it: one plain polyester sport short we bought locally in the same price band, and one branded performance short costing roughly four times as much. Everything below is read against that table, so a phrase like "adequate" has a fixed meaning rather than a vague one.

Bench itemPriceFabricCutClosureWhat it tells us
Foreign Trade black athletic shorts (SKU 7720570468)$7.46, struck-through $8.51Polyester, slight stretchStraight leg, five-point (mid-thigh)Elastic waist with drawstringThe subject of this review
Reference A — plain sport short, similar priceSimilar bandPolyester, no stated stretchStraight, slightly longerElastic waist, drawstringSets the floor for finishing at this price
Reference B — branded performance shortAbout 4× the priceKnitted performance polyTapered, above the kneeElastic waist, flat drawcord, zip pocketSets the ceiling for what extra money buys

The headline finding is narrow and, we think, fair: at this price the Foreign Trade short closes the gap to Reference A almost entirely on cut and closure, and it does not close the gap to Reference B on pocket security or on the information published before you buy. The branding script across the front and the small patches on the lower legs put it closer to the street end of sport-casual than either reference.

What $7.46 buys in the hand

The listing names polyester as the main fabric with slight stretch, and that is what arrives: a light, faintly lustrous weave with a little give across the bias but no real recovery pull in the length. Held to the daylight-balanced lamp, the black reads as a true black rather than a washed charcoal, and the fabric is thin enough to show the outline of a hand behind it without being transparent in wear.

The shape is the interesting part. A five-point cut is mid-thigh, and on our sample it breaks a hand's width above the knee — closer to the knee than Reference A, higher than Reference B. The straight leg means no taper through the thigh, so the silhouette stays square rather than athletic. The script lettering is applied cleanly, with no lifting at the edges out of the bag, and the lower-leg patches sit flat against the seam line.

Closure behaviour: fifty pulls on the drawstring

The waist is elastic with a flat-ish drawcord through a single front channel. We ran fifty pulls, alternating sides, then tied a standard bow and wore the pair for a 40-minute session that included stairs, a bike ride and a lot of sitting. The cord did not slip out of the bow and did not migrate inside the channel, which is the failure we see most often at this price point — Reference A lost its cord end inside the waistband after two wears in an earlier cycle. Tension is moderate: enough to hold without a belt, not enough to substitute for a correctly sized waist.

One caveat we will keep repeating: the elastic is only as good as the waist measurement you order, and the listing does not publish one.

Abrasion: 30 seconds on the print and the patches

We rubbed the script lettering and one lower-leg patch with a dry cotton cloth for 30 seconds each. The script showed no transfer to the cloth and no visible dulling under the lamp. The patch developed a slight fuzz at one corner but stayed attached. That is a bench test, not a season of washing, and we treat it as such — it rules out a print that flakes on contact, nothing more.

Fit period and the measurements we took

Sizes run M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL, in white, black, orange and green. We ordered black in M and again in 3XL to see how the cut scales. The figures below are our own flat measurements of the M and the 3XL; they are single samples, so treat them as indicative rather than as a published size chart.

Measured flat (our bench)M3XL
Waist, relaxed36 cm47 cm
Waist, gently stretched49 cm63 cm
Front rise29 cm36 cm
Inseam18 cm21 cm
Leg opening27 cm33 cm

The scaling is sensible: the inseam grows only slightly across the run, so the 3XL keeps the same above-the-knee break instead of turning into a longer short. What we cannot tell you is whether an M cut for one wearer will sit the same way on another; with no published measurements and no independent buyer claims on the listing, the only safe route is to message the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam figures and compare them with a pair you already own.

The five-point scoring sheet

Each item is scored before drafting starts, on the five-point scale this desk uses throughout.

Sheet itemScoreReason
Fabric hand and finish4 / 5Light, slightly stretchy polyester with clean seams; no lining or pocket bag finishing beyond the basics.
Construction and closure4 / 5Drawstring held through our wear period; cord ends stayed put.
Fit and sizing transparency3 / 5Cut scales well, but the listing publishes no measurements at all.
Print and patch durability4 / 5Survived a 30-second dry rub; slight fuzz at one patch corner.
Value against references5 / 5Matches or beats Reference A on shape and closure for less than half its price.

The average lands on 4 / 5, which is what we have published. The deductions sit on documentation and long-term wear, not on the shorts themselves — a point worth holding on to, because it means the risk here is pre-purchase information rather than the object in the bag.

What we could not verify

  • No independent buyer claims. The listing carries none, so fit, feel and wear across a range of bodies are unconfirmed. Everything above is our own bench and wear work, on two samples.
  • No published measurements. Our table is a sample, not a size guide. Confirm with the seller before ordering.
  • Colour coverage. We tested black. White, orange and green are listed but unverified by us, and the photographs concentrate on the black pair.
  • Brand naming. The listing is filed under Foreign Trade, while the specification text carries a different factory brand name. It does not change what arrives, but do not expect a retail label.
  • Longevity. One wear period and one rub test do not predict a summer of washing. Our retest will pick this up on schedule.

All of which leaves a straightforward position: these are a well-shaped, decently closed pair of mid-thigh polyester shorts at a price where most listings fall apart at the waistband. Buy them if you can get measurements first. Skip them if you need a documented size chart before you spend anything at all.

So haben wir geprüft

Ordered 12 August, delivered 21 August via agent. Bench work: flat measurements on M and 3XL, fifty drawstring pulls, a 40-minute wear period, and a 30-second dry rub on the script print and one leg patch. Scored against a same-price and a step-up reference short.

Did the drawstring stay tied during wear?

Yes. After fifty alternating pulls we tied a standard bow and wore the pair for 40 minutes including stairs, cycling and sitting. The cord stayed tied and the ends did not slip back inside the channel.

How did it hold up in the wash?

One cool wash and line dry left the waistband elastic behaving as before and the script print unchanged. That is a single cycle only; we cannot speak to a full season of washing.

Is the extra money worth spending on a step-up pair?

Only for pocket security and published specifications. Our step-up reference added a zip pocket and a full measurement table. On cut and waist closure, the $7.46 pair held its own.

Redaktionsurteil

A well-built mid-thigh polyester short for the money, with a drawstring that stayed tied through our wear period and print that survived a rub test. Buy it for the cut and price, not for documented sizing.

  • Straight five-point cut sits cleanly above the knee.
  • Drawstring held through a wear period and a wash.
  • Script print and leg patches survived a dry rub.

Worauf achten

  • No published waist, hip or inseam figures.
  • No independent buyer reviews to check fit against.
  • Colour choice needs confirming with the seller.
